| - | About This Course |
| This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to assist in the design and drafting of engineering and environmental maps and plans. You will learn how to analyse designs, data sets and plans, and present the results using geographic information systems (GIS). You will also learn skills in photogrammetry (measurement of light), remote sensing, mapping and using specific spatial industry software including ArcGIS, ERMapper, MapInfo, MicroStation and associated database products.
This qualification is delivered in a combination of distance learning and on-line environments. Lecturer contact is possible for metro based students. The Diploma will provide you with the fundamental knowledge and skill to assist in any spatial information service (SlS) work environment. You will learn how to acquire, manage and present spatial and attribute information in a geographic information systems (GIS) context. Data acquisition will encompass the need to define the scope of spatial problems; the acquisition and validation of existing data (both spatial and attribute); and the creation of new data sets where necessary. Data management will deal with the secure management of spatial data in a relational database management (DBMS) context; both in DBMS and GIS software environments. Data presentation will cover central issues in mapping science as well as in project management. Successful completion of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to gain employment in the Spatial Information Services as a technician. |

| Central Institute of Technology's Recognition of Prior Learning program is designed to help you to gain formal recognition for the skills and knowledge you may already have. This may mean that you are given a credit towards a qualification you wish to achieve and you don't waste time covering things you already know. The way in which you have learnt something isn't necessarily important. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) places an emphasis on assessment. This can happen in a number of ways:
- A collection of evidence you present to us (portfolio)
- Challenge testing
- Direct observation of your work
Find out more about RPL now - Get the Credit You Deserve. You can also get a copy of the RPL Candidate Self-Assessment Guide from Student Services, or download a copy here. |
